I´ve come accross this growing wild in a couple of places on my property in Colombia but have an inkling it may have been planted by the former owners and escaped. Do you know what this is and if it´s native to Colombia?

Yup, that's a Begonia all right. The leaves would suggest to me that it's an escaped garden type, but the base species for all that might actually be a native.

Thank you Lorax. I´m thinking it´s escaped. I wonder what the native species is.

Begonia coccinea, by the leaf shape of that one. There are actually about 150 species in your department/northern Ecuador, if I recall correctly.
