Hello, Can a Dicksonia Fibrosa tree fern be kept indoor all year long or does it need a cold period? Thanks, Zoltan
I'd keep it warm. They grow outdoors down here, where there is no cold season, just a really wet one. Are you keeping it fairly humid where the fern is?
Hi, Humidity is not a problem, I am simply concerned whether these ferns needs to be in cold or room temperature is good all-year-long.
Room temp year round is better; as I said before they grow in the wild here and we have no cold period, just a wetter one.
Dicksonia fibrosa is from New Zealand and does need a cool winter period (it can be grown outdoors here in Britain); keep it at around 5 to 10°C in winter, and 15 to 20°C in summer. High humidity is important. Lorax's Ecuadorian tree ferns are different species!
Here is a bit more information. Here they are also out side ferns along with the Australian dicksonia http://www.fronds.co.nz/product.html?p=1 http://www.anbg.gov.au/gnp/interns-2003/dicksonia-antarctica.html
