I've never had any issue and don't do anything special; I start in January indoors and just surface sow before spreading a thin layer of potting soil on top. Give them a little light and warmth and the seeds start to germinate within a week or so. When the weather gets warm enough I place then outside (in a pot) for the summer.....the last plant I had 2 took years but it actually flowered and produced fruit before dying (here the plants have to be moved inside for the winter)
