    Hello,

    My first post here.

I was searching the web for information related to growing other plants under or beside cedars.

I have a twelve foot high, double row of cedars about fifty feet long (facing SSE) along the rear end of my backyard. I can easily walk between the two rows of cedars which creat a canopy effect well above my head. I have another but newer ten foot high single row of cedars extending between my neighbours house and mine. The latter has been carefully maintained.

The higher row along the rear was actually snapped in half after the infamous ice storm that hit our area ten years or so ago. After successive years of pruning, the top of the hedge damaged in the storm has come back nicely and I have kept the sides reasonably pruned. I removed the branches from ground up to about four feet to allow some air and light to the south side.

Beneath the (along a curb on a quiet road) I have had daylilies growing for years and species tulips in the spring.

It is along the north side of the hedge where I have PJM rhododendrums. While leggy, they provide a wonderful ten foot high hedge in front of the cedars. They have just finished blooming and as in every year for the past twenty years were simply covered in flowers. I have tried azaleas which also thrive well. Hostas, trilliums and a few others, but all on the outer edges of the hedge.

I would appreciate knowing of any other person's experience growing plants beneath cedar hedges.

    Thanks.
