This year is my first attempt at growing fennel for the bulb, and it was not successful. The seeds germinated, plants were off to a great start and then they bolted without any bulb forming. What did I do wrong.? Bewildered in Colorado.

As I understand it, some varieties will not form a bulb, but have long fat roots instead. Of course, that was the kind I got when someone gave me a plant, but if all you want are the leaves for soups and salads, it will do.
