    Hello,
Does anyone have any tips for training acer palmatum understock to grow as a tallish standard? Also, how old should the understock be before grafting?
    Thanks!

I guess it depends on how high you want the standard to be. I would think growing the seedling in good light, with other seedlings around it would promote height. Should be well fertilized too. You will have to pick off low-growing shoots to keep a smooth, clear trunk. Then the question of how long it will take to become of size will all depend on how high you want the standard to be. A caliper of 1/4" is plenty to allow proper grafting.
