I bought a new home, and this stuff is now coming up like crazy in a few flower beds and the garden I have tilled. Is it something intentional or some kind of weed?

    Thanks!

Maybe add a photo without all of the water droplets reflecting the light?

It is hard to tell in the picture as I tried to get close, but they are very, very small. Maybe half an inch. They also came up in the tilled garden even after tilling.

I really hope it isn't lily of the valley as I have two dogs and they are highly poisonous.

Maybe something in the Polygonaceae? But that's just a wild guess.

I suspect that it's the tilling that spread it--whatever it is. Either by dicing up some roots, or dispersing something that was seeding (or had already seeded) a particular spot. Did you till/cultivate the flower bed(s) where it is coming up thickly as well, or just the garden? If only the garden was tilled, but it's coming up in the flower beds as well, perhaps it's something intentional from the previous owner: wait and watch for it to flower. If it's only coming up like this in areas that were tilled, probably something you don't want (to that degree, at least).

I've seen the same myself, at the moment I'm thinking each one is a little grass plant - but can't remember which grass.

I've had something very similar looking come up in my garden. It was a weedy Alstroemeria. Came up really thick like that from the roots. Looked very much like this, but quickly grew to much larger size, so seems unlikely for this and I don't think that grows in New York.

    I'm thinking crabgrass...

Consider also stilt grass (Microstegium vimineum)...
