Greengage tree diseases

    I live in Dublin, Ireland. I have a greengage tree that is about ten yers old. In recent years it has developed a problem in that, just as the plums are ripening, they seem to be attacked by a fungus that turns them black or purple in spots and then they "go bad". Some of the plums survive but the majority are ruined. Can anyone suggest what might possibly be the cause. Thank you.

    Thank you very much for this useful information. From the photographs it seems certain that youe diagnosis is correct. I will follow the suggested procedure and see if I can eliminate the problem. Thank you
