Good day, I have gotten a Greensleeves Dogwood to plant in my front yard. We were hoping to put it in the corner (pushed into the yard enough that the growth won’t hang over our property line) but that would put it about two and a half feet to the left from the main water line coming from the street. Is this the kind of tree that will break through the water line in the future as its roots grow? Thank you
Roots get into water lines that are already leaking for other reasons. Otherwise, the tree has no way to know there is a water source inside the pipes. And it is the water that is the attraction. So that the problem with a dogwood tree being planted close to a water line is instead that it will be in the way should the line ever need to be worked on.
Thank you for your reply, do you know how much radius around that type of tree that the roots grow? Like if the water line is 3 feet from the truck would it be safe for a crew to work on it without damaging critical root system?
