I found these in a sunny spot - not sure what they are, and curious if they could be edible. Does anyone know what these are?

Won't be edible, looks like Iris family.

What was the height of the plant? What were the nearest trees (or a general sense of the environment it is in, beyond "sunny spot")?

Probably is a Sec. Californicae iris, I was looking at my Iris tenax today and there are a lot of similarities. You may be able guess which species the one you noticed might be by its geographic location.
