Hey all, I have a pot garden outside and lately I have noticed that there is this green growth on the soil in a few of the pots. Is this mold? If so or not, is this harmful to my plants at all? I wasnt sure so I decided to scoop the top layer of soil off of a few of the pots to get rid of as much of it as possible. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!
looks like an algae to me. I've had similar to this in my pots before, particularly in bonsais and propagation house, but it's never caused me any problem.
You could try LIGHTLY forking over the surface of the soil in your pots to aerate it. You will not destroy the algae but it will look less unsightly. Also in future perhaps introduce some sharp sand or grit to your mix to stop the surface compacting. Malcolm
