I got a free Gravenstein whip last week as part of an urban bee habitat study in Vancouver (longer story - I got plenty of bees this year).

It's on M9 rootstock and because I have a small urban garden I'm planning to espalier it. I understand that it's triploid and will need 2 diploid friends to get fruit, but have also read that a crabapple would work, I'm not sure how that works but am interested in knowing. Here are the questions:

    1. Has anyone got suggestions for espalier-able apples I could use to pollinate the Gravenstein?

    2. What's an espalier-able crabapple that's good for jelly that blooms at the the same time as the Gravenstein?

    3. Does anyone know of a good place to get apple whips/advice near to Vancouver?

Just missed the Applefest at the Botanical Garden, figures. Any help is appreciated.

Liberty and Chestnut Crab would be good choices.
