Hello there i recently got a clipping from a grapevine, if i were to plant it now will it grow or do i have to wait? Please advise what should i do Thanks
If you don't have an inside growing situation you will have to wait till spring to root it outside. Buried in damp sand in an unheated garage or refrigerated it may survive till then, but the longer it is stored the more chance the molds will have and/or dessication will kill it. Try to get some closer to planting time; I think they store better attached to the vine. Ralph
So does that mean if i plant it inside in a warm place it will be o.k to grow, i know it's not in season but I read that it's o.k to get a cutting when it's dormant and use some of that rooting stim and plant it in sandy loam soil. Please advise me.
Yes but... The jury is still out on the use of rooting hormones for grapes - some say it is not necessary or of little benefit, others recommend it. The usual rooting mixes for grapes include peat and perlite and sand (I use a 2:2:1 mix); I would not use soil for an inside start. pH should be between 6 and 7. Bottom heat (~22 deg C.) and a cool top temp. (10 - 12) is advantageous to promote rooting and retard budding. Lights at 16 hrs/day and 400 foot candles (very bright) and misting twice a day till shoots are 200mm - 300mm, after that just make sure the soil doesn't dry out, and you can gradually reduce to 12 hrs of light. Don't allow too much top growth until it's in the ground. Harden the plant off gradually in the spring and plant out well after any danger of frost.
