I have a grapefruit tree grown from seed and at least twenty years old. Until a month ago, it was flourishing. Then, some leaves began to dry and curl and a few fell off. I loosened the soil and added some new. It is in a plastic pot in good light. Would a clay pot be better? How long do they rest between growth spurts?

So when was the last time you repotted and cleaned out the old soil mix? Many times the old soil mixes become hard like a brick sending the feeder roots to grow lower. Citrus are shallow feeders. If your unwilling to repot and only wish to add new soil. I suggest removing as much of the old soil possible, soaking your container in fresh water for an hour or so and flushing it with clean fresh water a number of times add fresh soil and water in. Thank you, Dale. I'll try your suggestion. It has been a long time since I changed the soil. Fortunately, the plant doesn't look worse than it did a week ago but the growth has stopped. Some of the leaves are curled up at the tips but no more have fallen off.
