Hi, I'm new to this site and just wanted a little help. I am growing a grapefruit from a seed. It is about an inch tall with one leaf. I am growing it indoors in a south facing window (it gets sun all day long). I did some research on grapefruit trees, but couldn't find anything about growing them in pa. I was planning on keeping this tree indoors all winter and taking it out in the summer. I just wanted to know if I am wasting my time? I'm not expecting any fruit off this tree, just wanted a citrus tree. Is this little tree going to die in a couple of months or does anyone think it will survive the conditions of being inside for the better part of its life? Any help would be appreciated. I would post a pic but i don't know how. Anthony
Hi Anthony! I am fairly new to this site also, but when I read your question I just had to answer. I have grown both orange and grapefruit from seed and yes, it can handle being inside in the winter and outside in the summer. Since it is still very small I might suggest putting a glass jar/globe/bottle over the top to hold in the humidity this winter. Of course, when it get larger this won't be possible and you may loose some leaves in the winter. If you give it plenty of sun and keep it watered, when you take it out in the spring and give it some fertilizer it will thank you with lots of new growth! Good luck and don't give up just yet! ps. Don't be afraid to prune your tree when it is larger. It will appreciate it!
