I just came back from europe and enjoyed the wonderful grapes from vineyards all around my village all summer. I have brought canes from italy to try in ontario in my back yard. I will plant them in the spring if they are succesfull to readapt. Will they be successfull? I would like to know what are the best eating variey of grapes suited for southern ontario?
Here are some, from white to red to blue (3 each): Kay Gray, Marquis, St. Pepin, Canadice, Catawba, Reliance, Concord, Mars, Venus. Here are a couple pages to reference: http://web1.msue.msu.edu/msue/imp/modfr/26429701.html http://ohioline.osu.edu/hyg-fact/1000/1423.html I also saw Canadice listed on an Ontario website.
If you want table grapes Himrod, Interlaken, Lakemont, Vanessa, Canadice, Reliance, Coronation, Festivee, Sooke, Skookum, Mars, Venus, Marquis just some of the varieties you can grow there. Cheers
Here is a website where you can buy cuttings of seedless/seeded grapes for zone 5 (& some lower zones). I have ordered some cuttings from this source and expect to receive soon. These should be OK for your zone too. http://www.littlefatwino.com/peterslist.html I have ordered 6 varities (Reliance, Vanessa, Himrod,Interlaken, V65163 ans Edleweise). One has to order minimum 0f 5 cuttings per type @$2 per cutting (minimum order $50). I am willing to share 2 cuttings of each at cost, plus postal shipping cost on as is bases since I am not the source but a home gardener. Anyone interested can send me an email but it has to be within a week or two weeks of this post so I can send the fresh cuttings as received from the source.
Hey Ottawa, I am interested in growing eating grapes and maybe some for wine.... I'm thinking: Reliance, Cayuga white, Delaware as my choices. In europe you could use blue moscat grapes for eating and they make the best wine. Can I grow blue moscat here in ontario?
here is what I'm looking for: "muscat blue" http://www.bakker.co.uk/r_90963-011/Grapes/Grapes-Palatina-and-Muscat-Blue.htm
gardenlover These cuttings that I mentioned will be my first try. I had bought and planted a rooted cutting from WallMart some years ago, the kind they sell in a cardbaord box and a ground hog burried it in a mound of soil. It disappeared for two years and this spring it came out with force and provided a number of bunches of blue grapes but with seeds. LIke it happens all the time, when one potponds the harvest for a day, a raccoon really beat us to it and had cleaned the vine. But it encourage me to try more so I bought these cuttings coming my way soon. That is all my experties at this time. But do look at the website I showed in my previous post.
Ottawa, "New york muscat" is suited for our zone's. I don't know which variety to pick, I had vines in my garden before and the grapes did not apeal to me for eating and they went to waste. I am looking for a sweet grape like a muscat....does this guy sell any...if not where should I look to find?
The guy sells Reliance and Cayuga as well as New York Muscat. He also sells many with muscat flavour whatever that means.
I actually spelled out the extent my knowledge. You have to check the website for more info on Reliance. Check the website below and read the conditions on the bottom for ordering. The owner does not budge on any of the conditions. It is possible that he may have more customers than the stock. http://www.littlefatwino.com/peterslist.html and there is more info about grapes, cuttings, wine making etc at http://www.littlefatwino.com/ My order is already executed and on the way for delivery.
Yes, we can share the cost. The details should be done via email. Send me an email through this forum. There are ways to do so.
Gentlemen, I had planted Reliance, Himrod, Interlaken, Red flame and coronation sovereign here and was amazed at the Reliance variety,.... In one year it had given a yield of 30 bunches of very tasty, reddish, sweet, seedless grapes.... Reliance is easily the best and easiest of them all to grow... Hope this personal experience helps, because when you ask ANY person in a nursery, the information is always blandly positive.... Cheers G1
