Hello, I have a 5 year old concorde grape vine that is planted within a foot of a heated slab foundation. It is very healthy and producing lots of grapes. Last year it took a real growth spurt and has climbed all the way to the roof on the trellis which is attached to the house. In full foliage it covers an area about 8 x10 feet. It is on the protected south side of our home located on the north shore of PRince Edward Island. I am concerned that with such growth, the root system might damage our concrete slab floor. I am also concerned that if we move it away from the sheltered spot it may not survive. Does anyone know how invasive or extensive grape roots are? Thanks.
Plant roots won't initiate a crack or defect in concrete but they certainly can aggravate one. There are products to deflect or discourage root spread. Consider Deep Root product, tree root barrier, it comes in linking panels, 24, 26 and 48 inches in depth.
