I grafted 2 cactuses. Graftings seemed to take and looked well for about 4 weeks. Now I see that soft tissue inside of graftings is shrinking. I do not know if it is drying out or trying to adjust to a cactus shape underneath. one of the graftings shrinked to about 50%, another one seemed to be doing much better but also started sagging in some spots. Also, these changes are happening to the top (grafted part) only, rooted cactus did not change. I do not have much experience with grafting but I want my cactuses to live. I will appreciate any information about this issue. Is it a common problem? Is there something I can do?
Hard to tell without a photo, but 50% shrinkage does not sound right. When I graft cacti they don't shrink noticeably unless the graft did not take. What kind of cacti where used as grafts and grafting stock? Where the grafts seedlings or adult plants?
Thank you for your answer, Graftings were adult and I'm not sure of the names but they look like the most common cactuses, roundish. They are very firmly connected. It gave me hope until they started shrinking. So, the fact that they are connected still doesn't mean they are taken, does it?
Even if most of the tissues have joined it does not mean that the vascular bundles have done so. And if they have not joined up the scion will dehydrate and shrink. May I ask what you used as grafting stock?
