    Hello,
My Dad has been trying to graft Japanese Lace leaf maples for the last couple of years, without much luck. He is in Sacramento California. Does anyone know if there is there anywhere in the "Central California" area ( Sacramento - San Francisco ) that he can go to either take grafting classes or meet people that would be able to help him out in his endeavors?

    Thanks
    Mark

Hello, I live in San Jose, Ca and I meet a gentlemen at Groveway Bonsai Gardens (absolutely the best bonsai garden on the west coast) in Hayward California and he was quite the aficionado on maples. So much so, that the head bonsai master at the garden allows him to watch over all the maples in the garden and there are some that are are nearly 100 years old. He was a really nice guy and took some time to chat with me and trade some info. Let me know if you are interested in meeting up at Groveway and I can introduce you. This time of year would be wonderful to see the maples displaying their spring form.

    Hello BayMaples,
Thanks for the response, I am passing on to my dad. I am trying to get him on line so he can respond directly. One way or another I will let you know, what he want to do. I really appreciate the information. I am in NY, but love bonsais. I am not good, but I enjoy it. If I have time the next time I am out, I may take you up on your offer just to see the Bonsai's and maybe learn something new.

Yep, I don't graft myself but put some of the newly purchased grafts (thanks Sam!) under a pine canopy. Of course the weekend that I plant is followed by a unseasonably cold snap. One of the tree had begun to leaf out a little prior to the transplant... but I suppose nothing to do now but cross the fingers...

Jan. 2008, I grafted approx. 20 branchs of a Japanesse Maple trees with Japanesse
lace leaf maples,,now (4-20-08) the branchs and trunks have leaved out,,,out of those 20 grafts,,I have 7 very interesting grafts growing (or trying to grow "BUDING")
There are three with full grown leaves on them,,(2 of these grafts are on trees in the ground,,1 is on a one gallon pot),,,there are also 4 one gallon pots where the buds
look very "RIPE" ready to break out,,the maple root stock, with these grafts on, have grown branchs 6 to 10 inchs long and each pot had 3 to 8 branchs,,

So I pruned these maple branchs back (leaveing only 2 leaves on each branch) I did this (thinking that the roots could provide more food toward the graft),,,I took pictures before and after the pruning,,,

I have read some articles on "FUNGUCIDE" ,,while they talked about useing it
They didn't say "HOW or WHEN"? I did use Sandwhich Bags on my grafts again this year,,,But I think I removed them "WAY TO EARLY" (I took the bags off when the grafts started to BUD) next year I will pay greater attention of when I remove (or losen)the bags,,(I was thinking of even puting a bag on one of these promising budding grafts now)

another thing I was looking at was the grafts that did not take this year on many of my 1 gallon pots,,,the trunk stock is alive and puting out branchs,,the trunk is growing
"BUT THERE IS ONLY ABOUT 2 to 3 INCHES OF TRUNK OUT OF THE GROUND"
I'm thinking that if I can graft this close to the root system that the graft will be that much closer to the source of food.

I have two 1 gallon pots that I grafted in 2007,,,"THEY ARE SO PRETTY" anyway I'm thinking that this coming winter when the leaves fall off I'll try transplanting them into
a "LARGER PRETTIER POT" However I done nothing with "SHAPING or STRATENING" these two trees,,,All I've done is try to keep them alive
