Which time of year is best for grafting Acer mono Hoshi yadori and Usugumo? I have tried Jan-March with very limited success and wanted to try and improve the success rate. Has anyone tried September timeframe for grafting? I have used truncatum and platanoides as my understock and have less than a 5% success rate. Any information would be apprectiated. Thank you.
Why not try A. pictum? I think seed is available. I have both these trees, Hoshi yadori is big enough that I think I can tell it is grafted on pictum. Usugumo is reportedly very difficult, hence the rarity. Good luck, these are very beautiful maples and not widely enough known. -E
Thanks for the reply. I was unable to get pictum seeds or understocks unfortunately for the last few years. Your right about Usugumo. It is a spectacular plant IMHO. One of mine is just a shade over 2m in height now and is one of my favorite acers.
That must be a spectacular plant, do you have a picture? Even the specimen at the Esveld aceretum is not that big, I have been fortunate to admire it... Mine is very little and right now is struggling to live through spring frosts. :( Sorry I have no advice for time of grafting though. I am surprised that no pictum seeds are available to you. Have you tried cappidocicum? -E
Sheffield's Seed company lists 1.5# of Acer mono seed in stock currently see link http://www.sheffields.com/products/view/150374/1
hi ,grafting on acer Platanoides is one advice in the book "Maples of the world"by Timber press ,chapter 7 pag. 224,chapter by Dirk van Gelderen..good luck! alex P.s. in the Villa Taranto Italy there is a big Usugumo ,very old ,no pics avaible ,sorry
A sometimes fellow poster to this forum sent me a picture of this tree, I don't think he'll mind if I include it here.
The largest Usugumo I have seen is in Villa Taranto: awesome in Spring. Just to see it is worth the trip. I took the pic there last year. It is true that it is hard to graft (I do not know why ;-))), Esveld has something like a year waiting period to get one. Gomero
Thank you Keith. I will order from Sheffield's. The U.S. National Arboreteum has a really nice size Usugumo. Unfortunately it gets riddled with insect damage to the leaves and is an ugly duckling when this happens. I believe the plant there is from the 1960's but I could be wrong since it's been a few years since I've been there.
I have had mine since 05 and keep it in a container. Whatever was used to graph it is in the process of overgrowing the scion. Is that normal due to the difficulty of grafting it? There is a big lump where the graft is. I'm not sure what the understock is. Kay Dye
