I remember a lawsuit brought by Monsanto against a corn farmer who collected seed corn from his own field but next to a Monsanto field of corn genetically modified for herbcide resistance. The corn farmer was getting the designer corn without paying the royalties. However, he was using a centuries-old practice of saving seed from his crop for next year. The farmer lost, last I knew. The case shows how little Monsanto could control their crop. I don't know where to draw the line between hybridizing and modifying genetics by other means.
