Hi, I don't have access to my books at the mo, would someone mind taking a look at the World Checklist to verify whether or not there is an A. palmatum 'Crimson King' or whether it's just c. queen, and the other is a platanoides (only) cultivar? Thanks in advance! -E
Don't have the checklist, but A. palmatum 'Crimson King' is listed on p.366 of Vertrees/Gregory under "Cultivar Names Not Elsewhere Described". HTH, maf Edit: lol - K4's comment wasn't there when I wrote the above.
Thanks much guys! As you rightly surmised I was just trying to remember if that's a legitimate cultivar, as is the case. -E
I'd suspect Acer palmatum 'Crimson King' is not a valid name - the ICNCP doesn't allow the same name to be used twice within groups of related species (generally in the same genus).
I had a similar thought. It would be interesting to see if the name made it into the checklist or not.
A nurseryman can, in principle, select, name and sell a plant with any name he/she fancies, irrespective of correctness with ICNCP rules: the UN Security Council will not, for the time being, authorize the bombing of his/her Nursery. Another different story is if the Maple Registrar (Westonbirt) accepted the registration of a cultivar with an invalid name. Gomero
