    Hello,

I received a bonsai ficus 4 years ago.
-I would like to know if I could grow it to a big tree...
-Should I keep the small pot I have or transplant the ficus in a taller pot?
-A long root has grown out of the bottom of the pot, what does it mean?
I love this plant because it pratically needs no maintenance, but if you have any suggestions please let me know!
    Good day.

looks great, for the best growth plant it outside...if you live in an area where it gets cold in the winter you will need to bring it indoors for the winter, if planting outside is out of the question, repot once a year to a pot slightly bigger than the root mass untill you have it to the size you desire...good luck

    Thank you for the info.
I'll post a message if anything goes wrong with the bigger pot!

Ficus plants liek being root bound. My das friend had one fer 20 years in the same pot, and when we repotted it, we killed it. So i would only check once a year, and if the roots are growing out of the bottom of the pot, then i would repot.

It's best to re-pot one size larger, keep the roots on the snug side though. On that note, a bigger pot does not mean a bigger tree. You want the tree/plant to almost outgrow the one it's in before re-potting. If the pots too large, the roots can rot.

If you ever do put your ficus outdoors for the summer, then bring it indoors before it gets cold, be prepared for some leaf loss. Ficus can be snotty brats that hate light change and will drop MANY leaves, if not all when un-happy.

    Canadianplant,

Yes, that's the good thing about ficus losing leaves, after a little time, brand new leaves will come back:)
