My gingko planted three years ago has grown fairly rapidly, but there are branches near the bottom and then at least an eight foot gap before short branches appear at the top of the tree. It is not a very good looking specimen. Should I lop off the top in the hopes side branches will appear, or will this spoil the tree? Thanks.
These look like stick figures for a long time. Let it do its thing. If you are still there at the time eventually it will enter a maturing phase, where it will fill in. Note that when you top a tree that has a strong upward orientation you are just messing with it, and are liable to produce forking or other defects.
My gingko looked like a twig in a 10 litre pot for a year. Come this spring, it put out 6 large branches, and the leader grew 45 cm in height... Best to just leave it alone and see where it winds up.
