Can anybody identify this large spiky plant, which I assume is a nasty weed?

    Thanks.

might be thistle. if the stalk has spines on it, then it's thistle. VERY hard to get rid of!! has a tap root and it can go very, very, very deep! also, if you let it flower and go to seed, you'll have at least a dozen more next year.

could also be a dandylion gone wild...i've seen some with leaves that large. again, another one that is hard to get rid of because of the tap root.
