    looks like Acanthus, bears breech(es) I think is a common name.

    thank you so much that appears to be it, do you think that it will die with a healthy dose of round up? we want to get rid of it but the owners of the house told us that it was nearly impossible to kill

    dig it up and put it into pots. there are bound to be people that love this plant somewhere in your area you can give it away to.

    its such a great plant it would be a shame to see it just be sprayed with round up!!

    Apparently it can be near-impossible to eradicate from some California gardens, so passing it along is likely to generate ill feelings down the road.

    Round-up, however, is said to be not effective (or as effective as cutting it down every time a leaf pops up). The method of getting rid of it is to dig out the chunk of soil surrounding the roots and toss the bundle, soil and all, according to some folks on Dave's Garden .
