Hi there: Could someone please advise me as to if they think I would be able to propagate Giant Grenadilla from seed? I am located in plant hardiness zone 5a, Campbellford, Ontario.
When should I start indoors and are there any special tips to starting such as nicking seed pod etc? Would it grow outdoors in this zone and would I have to bring in for overwintering???
I really appreciate anything this forum can offer

    Regards,
    Deborah

yes they can be grown from seed. however i am in florida zone 10 or 10 b depending on which map you look at. the plant i had the last three winters got burnt back by our short winter and has since perished.if you had a heated greenhouse than maybe. never tried to grow one in a pot not sure how that would work out. i did try grafting a piece onto a yellow variety because it handles our winter really well but none of the grafts lived for very long they need to be closer related to be graft compatable.it is a very good fruit and to me it has the strongest flower smell of all the passiflora. it may be worth a try to grow in a pot but defenately will not survive planted outdoors in you're area. i will grow this again just have to make room for a more protected area. i did not keep any seeds and the plant died before i could get cuttings growing. good luck. forgot to mention when i planted my seeds originally i just put them in soil only one of them sprouted so not sure if nicking the seed would help the seeds where not all that fresh so i was lucky to get the one to sprout. if you have enough seed i would say soak a few over night, nick a few , plant a few as is and than see which ones sprout better. with all passiflora the fresher the seeds the better

Hi Mikey: Thanks so much for the very detailed response. I will take your advise under consideration and probably not attempt in my zone.
Have a nice evening and thanks again
