Have 2nd yr garlic plant that is developing a bud. What is the best time to 'pick' garlic - pre bud or post bud? Daughter has taken over the garden and is venturing into areas I know nothing about. barb
Garlic for cloves is planted in late Fall, about the time one would plant tulips. It will start to bulb in the new year and be ready to pick sometime in July. The bulbs are dried and the largest clovers are utilized for seed. Your garlic is probably best eaten like one would chives. Pull the greens and use as required. Garlic is one of the easiest vegetables to grow. Simply plant at the right time and sit back and await a harvest. There are about 100 plants and all survived the Winter. Hard neck garlic is technically known as the ophioscorodon variety of allium sativum. Hard neck garlic have a "scape" - stalk - which coils from the top. These "scapes" are in much demand, and essentially gives the commercial growers two products from as field of garlic. There are three main types of hard neck garlic: rocambole, porcelain and purple stripe. My type is probably porcelain garlic. http://www.durgan.org/URL/?GGrowth 18 April 2009 Hard Neck Snake Garlic (Allium sativum) Growth
