Is it safe to put a boxed garden bed where a gas pipeline passes underground. My husband is concerned about fumes getting in the vegetable.

Having previously worked in the natural gas pipeline industry for 15 years, if it is natural gas I can tell you the chance of that is near zero. Even if the methane leaked it wouldn't hurt the vegetables. My bigger fear would be an explosion if it leaked, but again, highly unlikely. Most pipe in populated areas is double wall thickness or strength as compared to unpopulated areas just for that reason...

If you own a property with a gas pipeline or any other kind of right-of-way, or easement on it in BC, there will be a document registered on the title. If you know a Realtor, a lawyer, a notary or someone that works in these offices, ask them to pull the document. It costs a few dollars, but is well worth it. Just give them your legal description (on your property tax notice) & they can figure it out from there. Then READ IT!!!! & talk to people until you understand it. This is the legal basis for your relationship with whoever owns/operates the pipeline, even if they sell the company or W.H.Y.

Then, AFTER YOU HAVE READ IT & UNDERSTOOD IT, call the company to discuss any fine-points. |It probably won't be necessary though. The rights & repsonsibilities of each party are stated in the registered document. Nothing else has any legal weight.

If you call the company without doing your homework first, you will get all kinds of stories, depending on who you talk to (probably in a call centre in another country). I will bet long odds that whoever you call (& their manager) will not have read the document that relates to your property & will just tell you the latest general company policy. This may or may not have any bearing on your specific property.

Sorry to go on about it. I have dealt with these things in the past both professionally & personally & I got frustrated till I learnt to go to the source documents. They vary a lot. I also find that people almost invariably merely talk about these issues & then complain when they end up in a fight. It's actually fairly easy & inexpensive to get the facts beforehand.

BTW. I have a veggie garden on an easement - in my case it's allowed (I READ the document. LOL)
