I took a walk into the woods today 4-6-09 near my home in NH. I was looking at some Wild Black Cherry tree's when I see this odd glob of goo looking stuff on one of the trunks. I have never seen nothing like this. It looks similar to pine pitch. I touched it and it feels rubbery and is not sticky, or moist. Its also black and appears to be hurting the tree if you look closely around where it is attached to the tree. I've never seen nothing like this before. Is this a fungi, sap, pitch, or some kind of bug cocoon? I have no clue what this is. If anyone knows what this is please let me know and what it does. I'll call it "IT" for know.

Resin exudation. The tree produces it to plug wounds.
