Hello, i posted this on another forum and they said to come here where the experts are. The pics attached show my problem. This stuff is slimy & snow white. You can find it through out the vines. I first thought some bird or lizzard has thrown up on it but after finding so much of it i knew different. Does any one have an idea what this is? here goes trying to post pics. Tom
Not a fungus, is my bet. That looks a lot more like the slimy bubbly stuff that some insect pests blow around their eggs to keep them safe. It's on grapes, no? I'd say that the best thing to do for it is to trim it off (if it's not on the main stems) or otherwise mechanically remove it, then give the plants a good spraying with an insecticidal soap. I've always liked Safer's brand for this.
I was given an note to try and help with this ID a bit ago...I'm still looking. Do you have a clear closer up image? Of the texture maybe? I know some bugs will secret a bubbly goo to put eggs in/nest in or otherwise just hide in. However I'm thinking more on the lines of a slime mould? Have you noticed any color changes/differences...any odors.....extra moisture or....?
Don't know if i can or not. I will try to get better pics. These were taken about 3 weeks ago. When i get in from work it's dark and when i leave it's dark. Tom
ottawa, Don't think so, it looks just like where someone or thing actually spit on the vine. It is slimy like heavy salvia. I haven't found any thing to be in it. It seems to have recided since this cool snap (48 degrees) at night. I had the same thing for the last 3 years and really do not notice any thing happening to the vines. Tom
I think i may have found it. Would this be a spittle bug and what i seeing is spittle? If so what do i treat with? Tom
See if these non-commercial ways can help: http://www.canada.com/victoriatimes....html?id=6b435e72-2c3f-4991-bc22-38f617b1a34f Or: http://www.gardeningknowhow.com/problems/spittle-bug-what-bug-leaves-white-foam-on-plants.htm
It's doesn't look like a spittle bug there is too much slime there. It almost looks like a big slug?? . It's certainly interesting. Cheers
The froth does seem just a little long for a Spittle bug, but I still think that is exactly waht it is. The bug is known for the nymph stage, which produces a cover of frothed-up plant sap resembling spit; the nymphs are therefore commonly known as spittlebugs. - Millet
