Identification: Fungal fruiting body ID? found under OG Doug fir

    Found this unique, pink brain shaped fungus growing under a 60+DBH OG douglas fir in park setting in Washington state along the Columbia River.

    Phaeolus schweinitzii found on the opposite site of the tree so it is a concern

    It looks like Hydnellum peckii (Strawberries and Cream): If you see it again, take a look to see if its underside is toothed. This mushroom will bleed red droplets sometimes, but more often we run into it before or after the bleeding.

    There are other Hydnellum species that look like this, but at the bottom of photo #2 I see what looks like remnants of red exudate. So H. peckii seems like a reasonable guess from a photo.
