hello to all...This is my first post so forgive me if its been gone over before. I live 250km northwest of edmonton alta I recently planted two golden spice pear trees I'm not sure of the zone i'm in (i suspect 2) I was just wondering if anyone knows the chance of survival they will have and what i can do to increase there chance..Also i always hear that you need to cross pollinate to get fruit the thing that confusses me is do you need two different types of pear or the two G.S.pear that i have will be good. lastly and thanks for holding on through all the newbie questions is what type of fruit tree can i grow with little worries of failing crop from cold winters as it would be nice to be assured of some type of fruit in the yard. thanks to those that respond..
Howdy, Which part of the wood are you in? 250 nw? Will that be around Whitecourt? Pears are self-sterile, in other words they need another variety for effective pollination. Planting two Golden Spice will not work. You have to plant another variety. I'm tempted to say Ure but it's hard to recommend not knowing where about you are. Ure is a much better eating pear than Golden Spice. Peace Thean
you got it whitecourt it is, I kinda figured that they wouldn't make fruit. please recomend a good tree to pollinate with and also it is june 24 is t too late to plant another this year. thanks
i just found out that there is a pear tree in the yard two house down from me I was told that it was a late pear would this type be good to pollinate my golden spice pear it is no further than 250 feet away..Again thanks people
Howdy, You are in zone 2 but if you are in the valley part of the city, you may well be in zone 2a or even zone 1. Please consult Alberta Agriculture office near you. Golden Spice and Ure ripen end of August to early Septemeber in Edmonton. Your neighbour's late pear - what is it? If the fruit is fairly big, then the chances are it's not a Ure or Golden Spice. That being the case then it will pollinate yours. If you are on that part of the city before the dip (if approaching from Edmonton) you should be able to grow Ure. If the plant you buy is containerized, it's still not too late. Alternatively you can buy it now, let it remain in the pot and then transplant it after the leaves have dropped off in fall. Peace Thean
