Hi I am a new commer to El Paso texas. I am not familiar with the plant life here.
I have a huge tree in my back yard that as began to produce berry like fruit.
the tree is at least 40 t0 50 feet and it is totally coveredin dark red raspberry like berries......

CAN someone tell me what the tree is and if the berries are edible........

Dont eat anything from a tree until you have an almost 100% acurate ident of that tree.......it sounds a bit like a mulberry, a picture of the tree and fruit would help a lot.
For the brave or foolish, a survival technique of identifying if a fruit is edible is to rub a small amount on your lip, if it doesnt blister or cause any pain etc, its possible it might be edible.
its still best to be 100% sure its edible before you try.

The cornus i was thinking about was Cornus capitata (just so you can have a look)

just because birds eat berries doesnt mean we can eat them (my disclaimer incase anyone eats something they shouldnt and blames me)

The dogwood isn't going to have blackberrylike fruits on a 40'-50' tree in El Paso.

Pick a branch with fruit and take it to a nursery or other nearby information source.
