My Santa Rosa plums frequently split on the trees spoiling the fruit when nearly ripe. I thought it might be due to uneven moisture or excessive rain but last year I tried to keep the moisure level constant and they split anyway. Any suggestions?
Splitting usually is due to irregular waterings and fluctuations in humidity/moisture as you suggested. Another cause for splitting is being overripe. Perhaps pick just before it splits (ripens) and leave to ripen further in a brown paper bag as you like.
