    Hi

Our CO-OP in the Point Pleasant area has recently removed a very old, diseased and sickly tree and is looking for a replacement tree. We are considering a fruit tree as an option but considering all the discussion around the disease of the past Cherry tree, we will likely not plant another Cherry. I have been researching about other fruit trees and would like to know what other types of fruit or nut trees would work with the climate here in Vancouver. Although we intend to be diligent about pruning and cleaning up dropped fruit, sometimes these things are not attended to until urgently needed. We use the yard quite a bit in the summer and it would be unfortunate if the yard were unusable because the wasps have taken over. Any ideas?

    thanks

How about crabapple. Some varieties bloom gloriously in the spring and then produce wee tiny apples 2" or less, some of which are better than others for making specialty jellies, apple sauce, and apple butter (great for gift giving). The domestically inclined in your COOP could use the fruit, which would keep dropped fruit and yard messes to a minimum. Some varieties hold on to their fruit into the winter months, which provides food for birds and squirrels. Some varieties are more disease resistant than others, which would be an important deciding factor for you. Good luck with it.

I've an affection for Malus '[SEARCH]Adirondack[/SEARCH]', though it is an ornamental crabapple: 'Adirondack' from the US National Arboretum
