I have a Laurel tree in my garden. By about September its fruit ripens to dark purple. The fruit is sweet - I just tried a little bit.
I believe it could be edible - has anyone else come across anything like that.
The tree has large glossy leaves - If put on a buring fire it burns very easily when fresh and green.
The tree grows very fast - how can I find out if the fruit is edible or not without actually eating it.

    Laurel?

I think you need to first identify what type of Laurel tree you have. Laurel is a very general common name which can refer to many different species. Some may be edible; some may be poisonous.

  3. I have a Laurel hedge 9 feet tall with a mass of purple black smooth round fruit ( like smaller grapes).

Question: How do I go about defining its species to see if the fruit is edible?

Well, you can register for the forums and post some pictures to the Plant Identification forum, or you can take a branch with fruit to a good local nursery - they might be able to ID it.
