Please can you help me ID this plant? I bought one a few weeks ago & planted it, it seems to be doing well but it is clearly not what I thought it was and despite finding an image of one online it doesnt actually have a name or description!
Could be a white eggplant, Solanum melongena. With this large family of plants, don't eat something unless you are sure of identification first. Leaves appear within variability for eggplant, and flower looks very much Solanaceae. Why did you think this was a fruit? Could you have been purchasing ground cherries (Physalis spp.) or tomatillo?
Thanks for your replies I was asking for fruit trees/bushes in the garden centre.. I asked if they had any berries and the lady went to get this and said it is from Australia- for some reason I imagined in my head they were Goji berries having never seen one other than dried! Today I saw the same bush at the market and asked what it is, these people also didn't know- they said they thought it was some kind of melon from Australia! Obviously being in Cyprus i ran into a language barrier but these sellers also seem to simply not know what it is except 'fruit'!
And I have both Tomatillo & Physallis growing (from seeds bought in the UK) it is neither of those. The 'fruit' is very heavy and hard
Solanum muricatum? http://www.google.co.uk/search?um=1...num+muricatum,&btnG=Search&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&oq=
I don't think it's S. muricatum - even immature fruits on that one are striped purple when they're exposed to sunlight, as those fruits are. Also the habit in practice is more vining than bushy. The test would be to pick a fruit and cut it open. Pepinos have a distinctive, fruity cucumber scent and pale gold flesh.
