I have a 33 fot lot in Kits with South facing back yard & clay type soil. I thought that it might be nice t have a lttle bit a a privacy hedge in the back yard along the lane. I also like the idea of planting something that would bear fruit. I like the idea of blueberry / cranberry bushes or other fruit bearing shrubs. [I'm not sure but i think that blueberry stalks turn red in the winter for winter colour. Is this a good idea or am I going down the wrong road?

Maybe someone has as sugggestion of another bush that might work well.

    Thanks,

    Grante

I would think blueberries might be your best choice. With your clay soils, you should add 3"-4" of organic matter (fine bark, rotted sawdust, wood shavings, compost, etc) to the whole planting bed first. Blueberries will grow in heavy soil if it has enough organic matter incorporated and is not too wet in winter. Evergreen huckleberry might be another option, but they like even lighter soils. Another option would be black currant, but they are definitely not as ornamental as blueberries.
