Hello everyone! I made a mistake by planting a Madagascar Dragon Tree outisde. That tree has two truncs. One morning I found the leaves on one of the two truncs froze. Where can I cut it back from to allow new branches to grow? Do I cut from anywhere on the trunc, or from the base of the branches? The plant is now in a big plant pot indoors. Thank you.
Of 27 varieties of dracaena, I find only 3 or 4 listed as sub-tropical. The rest are tropical. The marginata, (of which you speak) probably did suffer some freeze damage. Being patient is all you have going for you in a situation as you had.. Any freeze damaged parts should have identified themselves by getting "mushy". Hope things turned out well.
Thank you Chuck, but this doesn't answer the question about where to cut it back from. However, I cut it from the branches where the leaves were growing. Last week I was very happy to notice that new things are starting to grow at the bottom of the trunc, and not the branch; which means that I can cut back fom the trunc, and get rid of the dead branches.
What you say is true. By this time, there should definitive sign of 'dead trunk- live trunk'. Squeeze the individaul trunks. After this amount of time, frozen trunks should indeed be fairly mushy. Cut them off where soft changes to solid. New stalks should then start once the cut ends have healed (calcified).
