I am growing a plant that first started growing from my compost bin. Not sure what it is but I'm assuming it must be some sort of fruit or vegetable??

I had an almond sprout in my compost and your picture looks much like the leaves on the little tree I now have...

My bet is on Fireweed, especially with your location. Another weed!

hey, one person's weed is another's flower... I like the fireweed that springs up around here! The bees like it too, so I don't pull it out. And I agree it does look like it in the photo, altho I thought the leaves looked a bit broad for fireweed...?

There are quite a few fireweed plants that have sprung up so it's easy to compare the leaves and the leaves on this plant don't have that distinctive leaf pattern.

The leaves on this plant are a bit serrated at the edges. I should have mentioned that it's been growing very slowly - I transplanted it in early April and it hasn't sprung up like a fireweed that's for sure. I'm thinking it could be a peach? I only put fruit and veggies in my compost - no plants.

but unless your compost is in a secluded tomb, seeds will be introduced by wind, animals, birds...eg. the birds around here like the fruit of the indian plum - oemleria - and poop out the seeds everywhere, including my compost pile. It has longish narrowish leaves, but not the same... no serration that I've noticed and it grows quite quickly.
I'd guess you're right about the peachy possibilities.

Actually, it is in a secluded tomb or to be more precise a tightly enclosed container... :)

ah so...let us know what your tree turns out to be; some of the finest things growing in my yard are volunteers - humbling but true... perhaps you'll have years of satisfaction to come from this little tree... (which I still think looks very much like my almond.) hope it turns out what you want it to be.

    I don't think it's Fireweed either.

My first impression was some type of Salix such as Salix viminalis, but it's near impossible to know from the pic.
