Does anyone have ANY sort of idea as to what this fungi is?? I photographed in the Massif Centrale region in southern france this summer

As you can see on the photo, its growing on soft, rotting wood, the surrounding area I believe is acidic soil. It's about the size of a saucer.

Any remote idea of what this is would be appreciated - thanks!

    Hi Stefan,
Is it very hard to the touch?
It could be the Red Belt Conk, Fomitopsis pinicola, growing in an unusual way having reoriented the fruiting body when the tree fell. The white would be the spore producing surface.
    cheers,

I agree with Frog. Several candidates depending on what kind of tree. I have a great fungi book of European fungi - but it's packed in a box until I move next week. It is definitely a polypore though.

Thanks for the ID guys - it just looked so utterly bizarre you know :P

I didn't catch the type of tree it was on.. but a general idea is all I really wanted :)
