Hello to all! Recently I photographed three plants which I believe they belong to foliose liverworts. Since I know practically nothing about these interesting plants this can be also completely wrong. I would appreciate very much your help in identifying them as much as it is possible from pictures only. They are probably nothing special since they can be quite frequently found in the vicinity. All three plants were photographed in alpine phytogeographical region of Southeast Alps in Slovenia (Julian Alps) at about 600 m altitude in a narrow valley (about three months/year no sun there). The place is a mixed forest at foot of a glacial moraine, limestone rock, humid and low light conditions, northwest exposition and near a mountain stream. The brown taxon was photographed right on the stream bank on bark of a fallen Salix trunk. This place has some more light because of the opening in the forest canopies above the stream. Nearly every fallen trunk in the vicinity is to some extent overgrown with this plant. The green one with sporophytes was photographed some 20 m off and above the stream bed in dense mixed forest, also on the bark of a fallen tree. This species seems also quite common there. The yellow-green one with very fine 'leaves' (macro picture is only about 10 mm wide) looks from far as a thin layer of green paint on a fallen spruce trunk. It grows not on the bark but directly on decaying wood. Thanks in advance for any information related to these plants. Warmest regards Amadej Trnkoczy
Checked through Phillips Grasses, Ferns, Mosses & Lichens of Great Britain and Ireland: Brown one could be any of Scorpidium scorpioides, Pleurozia purpurea or Frullania tamarisci - all these look similar. No close matches for the green or yellow-green ones though.
Thank you Michael, Using your suggestions I spent some time on web. Frullania tamarisci or F.dilatata seem the most probable names for the brown one. I will go to the place again and look at the botom side of the 'branches'. Should be able to find out which of both options is correct. The other two plants remain secret for now. Kind regards Amadej
