I've got a small Tiger Rose JM that I bought as a first-year graft in 2008. I planted the tree in a 1-gallon ceramic pot and it grew well last year. This spring, it is one of my first Japanese maples to leaf out, and it is covered with flowers. Isn't this unusual for such a young tree? Most of my older JMs that have been in the ground for years do not flower much, yet this 2-year-old tree is covered with them. I will try to post some photos later.
Dawgie, You have to remember that grafted trees are not "juvenile" trees, like one that was raised from seed. The graft came from a mature tree, and therefore may flower freely like any mature tree would. I have grafts I just made a month ago that are now blooming. What you're seeing is normal. Take care!
That makes sense. How come none of my other grafted maples have flowered like that? Just differences among varieties?
