Flowering Shrub from San Francisco Botanical Garden

    This tall lanky shrub was near Chilean and New Zealand plantings. Photo taken in late September. Please identify.

    That's puriri (Vitex lucens). It's a New Zealand native that should really be a dense, lushly foliaged small tree rather than a lanky shrub. Always seems hard to believe that the puriri is related the more widely grown Vitex agnus-castus (

    Thank you for the identification. The next time I visit, I'll have another look at it - perhaps it had once been a tree and cut back (it was in serious competition with other growth).
