I have a Flowering Almond Shrub which I planted approximately 15 years ago. This year it has produced fruit which is bright red and the size of large crabapples. The fruit started out looking like green olives. I cut one open and it looks like a peach inside.

My question is: Why would this shrub start to produce fruit now when it has never done so before and also, is the fruit edible?

Unsuitable conditions at flowering time until this year. Or it is grafted and the fruits are being borne by the rootstock.
