This plant was found on trails beside ponds of water. This particular plant and set of seed pods had a small blue flower in the shape of a sail at the very end to the right. One day it was there and was gone by the next day. The stems are very brittle and seem to be filled with fluid that leaks when broken. I am thinking in terms of a variety of Spiderwort. Photo was taken 10-12-10 in Russellville, Arkansas USA. Hope this photo helps. Any help with possible ID? Thanks!!!

There are several Commelina family plants it could be, and you are on the right track with spiderwort. Those are generally Tradescantia genus under the Commelinaceae, but this is probably Commelina genus. It will have three bright clear blue petals, or maybe the smallest one will be white or clear to inconspicuous, and they last only a day each. There are some that are white as well, and I recently finally came across the name of a related genus of similar appearance that had the lavender three petal flower.

Thanks thanrose for your help. I think I have narrowed it down to Commelina communis or Asiatic dayflower.
