I bought this plant in the bedding plants section of a nursery the other day, the tag simply reads "Yellow Portugal - Bushy plants with bright yellow daisy-like flowers. Full sun. Use in hanging baskets and planters" - I'm trying to read up on it online, but I can't find any reference to a flower called "Yellow Portugal" - does anyone recognize this and know another name for it, preferably the Latin? The flowers are about 2cm wide.

    Thank you!

Taking Andrey's suggestion, I see that Lysimachia nemorum is called "Yellow Pimpernel". Does "Pimpernel" sound like "Portugal"? It looks a lot like your photo, see photo on a medicinal herbs website.

And Lysimachia nemorum ssp. azorica is pictured on a Portuguese stamp. Maybe that's the connection? The Azores are a Portuguese archipelago.

Thanks you two! That sure looks like the same plant to me, mystery solved? Thanks so much!! Wendy - Yes I could see someone perhaps getting "Pimpernel" mixed up with "Portugal", I bet that's what happened.

I think the connection is more likely the Azores and the flower on the stamp. Or I'd like to think so!

Either way I'm happy to finally know what this flower is, thanks!

When I Google yellow portugal the only relevant hit (on the first page of results, anyway) is this thread. I am sure it is a mistake for yellow pimpernel, all it takes is somebody squinting at faded text and making the wrong conclusion about what a word is supposed to be.

Fascinating! Before our eyes we are seeing the evolution of one of those 'common names'.
