flower identification

    Can you help me identify these 2 flowers? They were found in Door County,Wisconsin in october 2007. I am interested in only the common name. thanks so much!

    Second one has a faint look of zinnia...or maybe a rose. ---Idle speculation whilst awaiting enlargement!

    first one looks like cardoon , aka ornamental artichoke, artichoke thistle.... same family as the more edible globe artichoke, although I've heard you can eat cardoon too.
