HI,Im Hoping somebody here could Id this flower that appeared in my back yard a few days ago.Im not a botanist or Gardener at all but Im very interested in the subject.Im living in Newfoundland.Thank-you.
Could this be a california poppy? Is california poppy another name for this plant. The area its grown in was recently dug up for renovations and we never planted anything there. Are they common.Thanks.
California poppy (Eschscholzia californica) has much smaller, orange flowers. The plant is generally smaller as well. For all of us who have had poppy seeds stuck on our teeth, we know that they are awfully small seeds. There are any number of ways it could have arrived there. Another possibility is that, like many weed seeds, the poppy seed had remained dormant & buried from an earlier garden. Your renovations brought that seed to the surface where it was finally able to germinate (need light to trigger germination). Simon
I agree with P. somniferum, they come up easily from seed and are often spontaneous garden volunteers. California poppies, Eschscholtzia californica are very different plants as smivies points out. Note that there are other species of Eschscholtzia that produce flowers in a range of colours. While the technical description of Eschscholzia californica indicates yellow/orange flowers, a quick image search brings up images of the California poppies in other colours--not sure if they are naturally occuring or crosses.
